Skin Care 101: Part 2 of 2 - insidefitnessmag.com

Written By Laura Soulios (@laura_soulios & @body_tuned_by)

As we discussed in part one of Skin Care 101, there are many different ways to treat various issues that our skin might have, to keep it looking fresh and healthy, which in turn gives us lasting confidence! Many of these treatments, however, are little known and understood even less. Which is why I wanted to break my article down into two parts, to really give you all time to read and digest the information that is out there. So without further adieu, let’s dive into numbers 6 to 10 of our Top Skin Care treatments!

#6 – Microneedling (aka Vampire Facial)
We have seen this treatment floating around the celebrity world for quite some time now. If you have done any research you may have been taken back by celebrities smiling with blood on their face, yes this is Microneedling! So, what exactly is this Microneedling? It is a treatment that uses microscopic cone shaped needles, which are quickly inserted from 0.1 to 1.5mm depth into your skin at a constant stroke rate of 150x per second. It does have a bit of prickly feel but luckily, we use some numbing cream on the area before the treatment begins to take the edge off. This treatment is great for Neo Collagenases (New Collagen Growth), Scar Reduction (including acne scars) and Stretch Marks. Though, a word of warning: not all medical spas carry the world Gold Standard German made patented technology Dermaroller device! Others will offer you low cut prices at 75% off the treatment using some Alkaline double AA battery machine puncturing your skin with blades rather than patented cones. Don’t fall for the imitations. Trust me. When clients come to me having tried a series of Microneedling treatments elsewhere using sub-standard technology, they tell me that after one of my treatments they saw a bigger difference then four of the others. It makes me feel good knowing we offer the best to our patients. I tell you not all systems are made the same! So do your research and keep that in mind if this is a procedure you’re interested in. Best results are in a series of three treatments with a post treatment Hyaluronic Mask to sooth the skin. As a bonus, we also incorporate our LED Opera Mask Light Therapy system for even quicker healing and hyaluronic penetration. All of our treatment plans include your personal handheld at home Dermaroller (made in Germany) and a 30ml Esthederm Hyaluronic acid serum to make your results last longer! So there is no need to be scared of this wonderful treatment! As long as you are going to the right place with the right device then you will surely love the results that Microneedling gives (and you too can share your bloody boomerang selfies) anytime you want, not just on Halloween.
#7 – LED Mask (aka Opera Mask)
This is a device famous worldwide and found in many celebrities’ homes for personal daily use. We have all seen Jessica Alba’s Opera Mask wearing selfie’s all over Instagram. Since then, it definitely has people asking “What’s so special about this mask?” Well it utilizes three different wave lengths of light (phototherapy) to penetrate the skin on the face and neck for the following reasons: Acne skin: to close pore size, kill bacteria, prevent scaring and prevent further breakouts. Anti-aging: stimulate collagen and elastin (something that drops in quantity as we get older), and helps with sun damaged skin and pigmentation. Inflammation: healing the skin post treatments (such as Microneedling or Q Switch Laser), reduces redness and helps with skin sensitivities such as Rosacea. This technology can be used as a stand-alone treatment. Many clients just come in for a quick 15min pick me up to get a boost for the day or before a date or event. I always love to incorporate it into many of our treatments here at Body Tuned By. We not only can use this on the face but on the body too! The results are noticeable just after one session!
#8 – Fillers and Toxin
It would not be a celebrity skin talk if we did not mention these two injectable products! Although they are considered non-invasive, I, personally do not agree. After all when you are injecting Botulism (Botox) and Dermal Filler into the skin, how can it not be considered invasive? So, what is Botox (Botulinum)? It is a neurotoxic to prevent the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings and the neuromuscular junction and thus causes flaccid paralysis. Basically, it causes your muscles to become weak and loose their strength so your lines are not as noticeable; without moving the muscles under the skin you do not get the wrinkles, or what we call ‘definition’ on other parts of our body. Dermal Filler is a soft tissue filler injected into the skin at different depths to help fill in facial wrinkles, provide facial volume and augment facial features, restoring a smoother appearance. Most Dermal Fillers use hyaluronic acid either synthetic or organic. All I can say is do your research on this. A lot of celebrities actually look worse now than they did before the use of injections and some even have had to surgically remove the buildup of undissolved filler in their skin. It’s ultimately your body so you are the judge as to what you want to put in it. Just as you spend all week researching the best protein or probiotic supplements on the market, do your research about these two injectables and their long-term consequences.
#9 – Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels are among many celebrities’ favorite procedures. Although some celebs may not openly publicize their treatments others have no problem telling the media that they are huge fans of chemical peels. So, what exactly is this chemical peel? Typically, they include mild acids to dissolve the top layer or layers off your skin, exposing the younger next layer of wrinkle free skin! The deep chemical peels will likely create a mild burning sensation and your skin may look like it’s sunburned. This redness only lasts around 3-7 days depending on your sensitivity. Depending on the type of peel you may have some skin peeling and sheading will occur so you will want to stay out of the sun for a while. I tell my clients to think of their new skin like a newborn; you wouldn’t leave your newborn sunbathing all day, would you? So, protect your skin! Chemical peels are an ideal treatment for almost anyone, men and women of any age and are commonly used for the following: Hyperpigmentation – Melasma Acne & Acne scarring Large Pores Fine Lines & Wrinkles Dull, Uneven Skin Preventative Antiaging The end result is fresh, smooth, youthful glowing skin! They are usually done in a series depending on the skin issue we are working with. Here is a hint I will let you in on: Not all peels cause burning and heat production. I do carry a patented peel that leaves you cool and with less downtime, though I will leave the details of this for a further article.
#10 – Electric Facials (AKA Micro-current Facial)
Have you ever worked out your face? I mean we train our legs, abs, chest, back etc. but what about our face? Another one of the celebs non-invasive favourite treatments involves micro-current technology. This treatment involves zapping your face with tiny electrical currents to stimulate tone and tighten your facial muscles. Essentially stimulating the muscles underneath, thus working them out. The electric stimulation technology has been making waves in the cosmetic field recently, but has been used on the face and body by professionals for decades. We can incorporate the micro-current in our treatments to help improve the facial contours, reduce wrinkles, firm, tone and smooth your skin. You can also supercharge your at-home routine with safe in-home technology for facial toning and full body toning. The ability to treat your own body or face between professional treatments is a huge factor for our clientele who are as much a part of their process as we are. Personally, I like to use it while I’m reading a book or watching Selling Sunset on Netflix at night. Only 5 minutes a day on your face will help you to improve the look of your skin tone and reduce your wrinkles. Just like how your physique is not made in one day same goes with your skincare. Not one treatment, not one session will give you the results you’re looking for. It takes time; it’s a commitment and an investment in yourself! This article has hopefully started your appetite and educated you about technologies that produce natural results and make you beautiful and younger looking without surgery! Age gracefully, be yourself and I am here to help take your hand and help you reach your goals, naturally and professionally.
