National Wine Day
In vino, veritas (“In wine, there is truth”).
Today is the annual national day of recognition for one of civilization’s most celebrated and popular drinks. It’s the go-to beverage for special events, intimate evenings, long weekend relaxing, and the perfect companion to so many foods. Sometimes it becomes a challenge to pair up meals like steak or fish with the exact type of complementary wine, but therein lies the much of the enjoyment.
And if you’re very health-conscious and want to avoid all the bloating carbs and sugar in beer, wine is an excellent alternative. Many doctors recommend a glass of wine a day for women, and two glasses a day for men, for the cardiovascular benefits associated with wine. Since it doesn’t contain the same high concentration of alcohol as liquor and spirits, you can savour a full glass at your own pace without getting buzzed too quickly nor doing a number on your kidneys.
There are countless variations of wine as produced all over the world. The number might be in the thousands. But here are some of the most popular types of wine to enjoy today on May 25 (and any day):
WHITES
Chardonnay
Pinot Grigio
Riesling
Sauvignon Blanc
REDS
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Pinot Noir
Syrah
Of course, there are many fancy variations that fall in between like pink chardonnay and zinfandel. There’s really no limit to the type of wine, other than the imagination of the producer. CHEERS!
