When's The Best Time To Exercise?
Many studies discuss whether you should work out in the morning, afternoon, or evening. The time of day you choose to exercise can influence the type of workout you do and the amount of energy you dedicate to it.
Studies show that the best time to exercise is when your body’s temperature is at its highest. As the day progresses, so does the body’s temperature and it peaks in the afternoon or early evening. Another benefit of working out later is that protein synthesis also peaks later in the day, so your body will recover more quickly if you hit the gym in the afternoon. A study published in Muscle & Nerve reports that they saw an 8-30% increase in physical and aerobic capacity and strength in people who chose to work out in the afternoon or evening rather than in the morning. Working out at night can be tough, however, because it is usually the last thing you feel like doing after a long day of work.
What if afternoon or evening exercise isn’t for you? There is no reliable scientific evidence that shows that you can burn more calories at certain times, and going to the gym in the morning can still provide tremendous benefits for your body. Studies show that working out in the morning helps you continually focus on your fitness goals before your email inbox fills up and the phones start ringing at work. In the end, the best thing you can do is choose a time that works for you and stick to it every day.
