How to Pick It: Avocados
The two most important things to look out for when shopping for avocados are colour and feel. Dark skinned avocadoes are generally riper than those with lighter skin. Avocados with dark skin are about four or five days away from being ripe, so they’re good choices if you don’t want to eat them right away. Choose one that is somewhat firm, but not mushy when you gently squeeze it. If it yields to firm pressure, then it’s ready to eat within a day. If you want to keep it for a few days before you eat it, buy one that is softer and doesn’t yield to firm pressure (it will last one to two days). Finally, try to avoid avocados that are overly hard, have cracks or dents, and are mushy because this means that they’re overripe.
